"The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to F. A. Rhoades, Sub-Lieutenant, Royal Australian Naval Voluntary Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy as a Coast Watcher in action against enemy forces in the Southwest Pacific Area . . . Sub-Lieutenant Rhodes was a Coast Watcher (Project Ferdinand). He manned an outpost at Lavoro on Guadalcanal where he had previously manned a plantation, for the period specified in his citation, reporting daily on Japanese activity. "

Adam Elliot wrote:
"Rhodes was based at Lavaro Plantation on the North West coast of Guadalcanal. I understand he wrote his story to rebut particularity a pamphlet, "Among Those Present", published in 1946 by the British High Commission to the Western Pacific Territories which was based in Fiji. Rhoades story is interesting as he relates frankly his relationships with local Solomon Islanders and presents a more gritty picture than the often idealized one of the fuzzy wuzzy angels."
