Horn Island crash

Post by ironrange »

19th Bombardment Group
Bombardment Squadron
Plane named
Serial No 41-2636
Date of Crash – 13th July 1942
Location of crash – ocean near Horn Island runway
Crew
Curtis J HOLDRIDGE Pilot Lieutenant

At 2.34am B17 – 41-2636 was part of a mission to attack Lae New Guinea with another five other B17’s. The first three B17’s departed Horn Island without incident. 41-2626 was then taking off from the Horn Island airfield during heavy rain and high winds when it ran into difficulties. As the aircraft began to lift from the airstrip, passing over mangroves, it immediately experienced a strong gush of wind, causing the aircraft to drop dramatically towards the shoreline, crashing 300-400 metres, and causing the right wing to be ripped off, and crashing into a coral outcrop.

Does anyone know the crew members that were also on board?
Does anyone know how to get a crash report if there is one?
Anything further that may be able ot assist?
Cheers Mick

As far as I can tell, there is no Form No. 14 AAF Aircraft Accident Report for this accident.
