B-25J #44-30942 Lost 7/7/45 over Formosa

Post by billhowe942 »

Good afternoon, Everyone,
I am researching the movement of this aircraft from the time of its acceptance from NAA Kansas City on March 15, 1945 to its arrival in the 38th BG at Lingayen four months later. I know its final resting place, just off-shore on the west coast of Formosa and its first appearance with the 38th on July 6, based on an Aircraft Movement sheet from that date. I would like to find out the following: 1) what organizations (service groups, presumably) or other bomb groups possibly flew this airplane before it arrived at the 38th in Lingayen, PI? I feel very strongly that it was a brand new airplane that did not survive its only mission in combat. The Aircraft History Card that I have indicates that #942 left San Francisco on 9/17/45 and concludes with the notation "CON FLAK" meaning condemned due to anti-aircraft fire 7/8/45. If my research is correct, this was the last aircraft lost by the 38th over Formosa. Their remaining missions were flown from Okinawa. Further, if my research is correct, the 71st SQ to which #942 belonged did not lose any more aircraft before the war ended. I would like to fill-in the time the plane made its way across the Pacific from San Francisco to the Philippines. How did combat groups receive their replacement aircraft? A real grand slam would be if any photographs of #942 exist. Maybe someone out there can point me in the direction I need to go. Thanks, Bill

Hello again. In my original post I mistakenly indicated B-25J #44-30942 departing San Francisco on 9/17/45. That is incorrect. Its date of departure for the Pacific was 5/17/45. Bill
