My name is Ward Dodge. My dad, Clarence, "Bus", Dodge spent most of his time in WWII with the USN in the South Pacific. He passed in 2008 at age 89 years old. Now I wish that I would have asked more questions, or I wish that he had been able to talk more about this time in his life. He was a radioman/gunner, officially rated ART1C. Spent time flying in SBD Dauntless, SB2C, SNJ, TBF / TBM Avengers. Units were CASU 7, CASU 50, & CASU 68. Dad spoke of spending time on the Hornet (not certain CV8 or CV12 ?), WASP, ENTERPRISE, & some Kaiser escort carriers. He mentioned also being at the Naval Air Stations (N.A.S.) Treasure Island, Whidbey Island, & Sand Point. He told a story about being in one of several Avengers that ran out of fuel and ditched in the sea somewhere in the Solomons. Several men were killed. He survived with a number of others after swimming to a small grassy island, then rescued after spending several weeks there. It would be a great bonus for me to find someone to assist in finding details of this event!

Hi, folks!

New guy here ... just joined. I'm 66 years old, Vietnam vet (Mech Infantry 1968) and have been interested in the Pacific Theater since I was just past infancy. My natural father ( a C-46 pilot) was KIA in China 10 days before I was born. Just finished reading "Nanette" ... what a sterling book! (I've ALWAYS been a sucker for P-39's and P-63's ... from the first Revelle model of their P-39 I build when just a little kid.)

Not much else to add ... but nice to be aboard.

Cheers,

Billy

Welcome aboard. Nanette is one of my favorite books on the airwar in WWII. I recommend that you look over the page on Edwards Park at Pacific Wrecks. It includes a copy of his obituary, a photo of Park and a painting of Nanette.

richard rudd wrote:Sounds like a fascinating area for WW2 history. See Wikipedia re Battle for Ambon. The massacre at Laha was in retaliation to the Japanese loss of life when a mine sank a Jap ship in Bay of Ambon. Position of that ship should be known by some older Ambonese.
Post again whatever you find,... any aircraft as well, on land and in the sea.

Hi Richard,
yeah, I know about the W9 minesweeper, and the laha massacre. I have the coordinates and will be conducting a search soon. It will be a pretty important historical ship to find.
We have found possible remains of a plane, and also found a bomb, probably arial. The Indonesian military has recently dismantled a bomb on a plane in the bay here. I have also found a big winch, with no boat attached to it. might be blown off.
We have also identified the wreck that is in the bay here, (found a plaque in the engineroom), it was not WWII, (it was believed to be a dutch cargo vessel, supposedly hit by a Japanese torpedo) but it was sunk in 1958, during a secret CIA black-ops (called "operation Haik") against he communist rebels. She is build in Hartlepool, England, in 1940. Her name is "Duke of Sparta", later sold to the Grimaldi brohers in 1951, and renamed "SS Aquilo"
more about this you can find on http://www.muckdivingindonesia.com/diving/wreck-diving/
if I have some more info or find anything else, I will post it.

Marcel Hagendijk

Hi All,

Retired RNZAF person, born Australia, bought up NZ, returned to Australia.

Dad was driver in RAAF in New Guinea and NEI. Milne Bay, Port Moresby, Morotai, Noemfoor, Tarakan.

Interested in B-24 history, principally operations in Pacific area. I have an ACCESS database which collates ALL available information from every published source I can lay my hands on. This, together with a lot of original data collection, allows me to analyse operational histories and perhaps correct some long held mis-information.

Feel free to ask for any B-24 information, if I don't have it, I might be able to point you in the right direction

Pete

Hi all, located in Fredericksburg Virginia. I am researching the loss of B24J-44-41258 which went down on Nov. 14 1944 with the loss of its entire crew. Considered as MIA it seems as if the wreck was actually located in 1990. I am working with members of the crew's families trying to get JPAC and DPMO to reopen the case which was never thoroughly investigated. Any assistance with ID of the crew or other information that we can use to goad authorities into action would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
my interest starts in Papakura New Zealand where my grandfather (a WW1 machine gun vet) served again as an instructor at Papakura army base.
Ardmore airfield was also close by and my dad's cousin Morris would fly low over his mothers house when he returned on leave from the pacific...
The Murray family home in kelvin rd was a hive of activity as we had a tennis court and many Johnny Dough boys went there to play tennis and forget...a lot had already been through hell in the pacific and were spelled there until going back...perhaps never to return
I have a few old photos of some of these GI's
later on in my life (approx 1970/71) I lived in Gove (Nulunbuy.. NT) where Beauforts were stationed during WW2
I spent many long hrs riding around the old airfields and exploring the 2 old planes just off the main highway...
with a keen sense of history I'm keen to explore and locate aircraft wrecks.....

I'm a reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer. I just wrote a small story about the positive identification of William Sarsfield. Here's the story: http://www.philly.com/philly/news/break ... ified.html

I wanted to sign up so I could see what else is available on this site. Thanks. -bob

Hello,
Glad to be here. Thanks for the book reviews and travel info.
I joined the forum to learn more about Saipan during WWII. I'm planning a trip to Saipan in honor of my father-in-law.
