Re: B-29 loss, AAF serial # 42-63508, May 25, 1945

I found another online link that has some of the maps, in particular sheets 6054-II, -III and -IV. Unfortunately not the one we want 6054-I. http://bbs.godeyes.cn/showtopic-384835.aspx However, if you study those 3 maps you can figure out how the grid system works and how it would line-up with the m...

Re: B-29 loss, AAF serial # 42-63508, May 25, 1945

Working out the co-ordinates of the corners of 6054-1 it would appear that: The lower left corner is at 35.8333N, 139.75E (35 degrees 50 min N, and 139 degrees, 45 Min E) The upper right corner is at 36N, 140E. The other two corners follow from the above. The "square" is roughly 22.5 km wide and 18....

You may have already found this, it is AMS-L774.

http://cluster3.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/maps/AMS-L774.jpg

You can locate the 6054 - 1 quadrant on the map. The co-ordinates inside that would be guesswork.

Re: American pilot POW in Borneo

David, As a followup to my post above about the US POW file only showing 6 American military names in the one Borneo camp listed, (Camp 590) I thought it would be interesting to see what units those men were from. The units might give you some further possibilities to search. Corrin, Phillip R and N...

Re: American pilot POW in Borneo

David, I did a little more searching on the POW data bases given in the link above. It appears the 2nd POW database, labeled WWII Prisoners of the Japanese, is actually a subset of the first POW file. (At least every person I checked in the 2nd database also appears in the first). So using the 1st P...

Re: American pilot POW in Borneo

I checked the fold3.com site for the name David Willfinger, David Wilfinger and soundex searches for any name that would "sound" similar. Fold3.com has the Missing Air Crew Reports for Army Air Force losses in WWII. It also contains info on enlistment records. No matches. I also checked the POW list...

Re: Nose Art Photos...Curious about their history

There seems to be 4 versions of Target for Tonight (or Tonite) here, the first two are 5th AF planes. You have probably seen them, but perhaps some have not.

Re: A GREAT F7F Mystery-- need your help

There may have even been a 3rd P-61 lost at the same time. 42-39560, which seems to have gone down 3 or 3 mi off Iwo after the crew bailed out. http://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/wiki.php?id=114901 "20 Apr 1945" "Iwo Jima, 2-4 miles NE " "Crew bailed out and crashed at Iwo Jima. Condemned inventory...

Re: A GREAT F7F Mystery-- need your help

I think the witness has mis-remember or confused an incident. There was a crash of two P-61s Night Fighters on Iwo Jima on that date. Here is the grave of Clair E Mattoon:

A crash on takeoff would explain why there is no MACR.

Re: Info regarding George Q. Lockwood, Jr.

George Q Lockwood, Jr does show on the roster for the 89th BS in the 3rd BG, so that was his unit. Looking for any other information about him in the 3rd BG websites does not seem to show much else. I cannot find a MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) on fold3.com for him. It is possible that no report wa...

Re: Seeking info on B25J #44-29371 crash site.

I looked up a little more info. Attached are three internment documents which give a little info. It would appear that the men were first interned in the AAF Santa Barbara Cemetery #1 on Luzon. This was a temporary cemetery. At some some point there was a consolidation to the Manila American Cemeter...
