I suspect that at some time, someone has tried to salvage this airplane.

In one of the photos, the centre section looks complete, but appears to be upside down.

No way that a crash would take that off as neatly as it has.

The photos you have shown so far indicate C47 family, it is not by the look of it from the B24 family.

In actual fact. all around the world there is great interest in recovering wheeled, tracked vehicles, and of course tanks etc. Particulary in the USA, there are great problems in re importing military vehicles back into the country. The reasons given are preety weak, but the rules appear to be infle...

Macca

The reference is under RAAF aircraft.

Heading is

My understanding is.

Now tell where you are coming from, particulary in regard to Radios, the C47 until at least the 60's were still using their original gear.

I think you may get some more answers.

The Gibson Girl USA Model SCR578, is a self contained emergency transmitter was developed from a captured German product in 1941. It originally transmitted on 500 kHz, and had a range of 200 miles from 2000ft. There is a lot of information on the internet, either under Gibson Girl or SCR578. You nee...

My understanding and I will check with mates, is that the Gibson Girl transmits a distress signal which is produced by turning the handle.

My understanding is that it had a long range.

I will revert more

A great effort you are making. As you already know the Gibson Girl was stowed in rear most cargo door, and could have survived a crash landing, however it would require both the attenna which is a wire one being hoisted into the air, by the ballon that which is also within the kit. The Gibson Girl i...

My understanding, that this is the last RAAF C47 from WW2 that has not been found.

It was the subject of posting previously, but concrete information was forth coming.

The general feeling was that the airplane was lost in the sea.

My understanding there are no B17's in Australia, there could be small pieces left from crashes, but to my knowledge there are no complete airframes. This airplane is an E model, which to my understanding again, unless the one at Black Cat pass is an E model, makes it the only one left in the world....

When I was based in Darwin in 1961, I visited the site, however the centre wreckage was guarded by two rather large snakes.

Pays to get all the good oil when one goes visiting.
