Re: Fenton and Long, Northern Territory

Delete all reference to OXO in the first reply - it's too 'beefy' and should read UXO...

Re: Fenton and Long, Northern Territory

I have shown Army and RAAF personnel those sites that are suspect with both chemical and UXO and have also provided all this information to the military in Darwin and at Dept of Defence in Canberra on various occasions along with the positions marked on 1:50000 maps. I'm not sure what your role is i...

Re: Fenton and Long, Northern Territory

I believe the 895th Chemical Coy was a part of Base Section 1 based at Adelaide River - the site of the unit's camp was north and west of the old Highway after turning off from the Fenton Road. A few kilomtres further north is the former RAAF Burrell Creek chemical warfare depot known as the '88-Mil...

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

I'm currently into The Emperor's Codes by Michael Smith (Arcade. 2007. ISBN 1-55970-852-2), which goes a long way towards debunking the myth of the Americans being the first to break the Japanese codes, when in fact the British and Australians were active from the 1920s. The book includes detail on ...

Re: The RAAF Hudson Story - Book Two

Andy, I did and it is worth every dollar - it is an exceptional addition to anyone's library and in particular anyone who has an interest not only in the RAAF but the Hudson as an aircraft that served Australia so well. The Hudson squadron losses were apalling and David does them all; aircrew, groun...

Re: P-40E Identification

Hi 'Rosie', Gordon Birkett, alias Gordy, found a way of identifying the P-40s via the c/n stamped on the rear cockpit bulkhead and on a number of items throughout the aircraft. Between he and Shane Johnston in Darwin they managed to identify a number of the P-40s used by the Provisional Squadrons an...

Re: FOUND JAPANESE ZERO INSTURMENT (GAGE)

Hi jsf74,

If you post a photo of the instrument I can look up a couple of references I have. A general overview photo and any detail including the data placard would be helpful.

Re: QANTAS Catalina on the way

Many thanks Richard. I don't think amny would realise just how many there are remaining and certainly not the numbers in Australia. I'll update DAW accordingly.

Many thanks again and

Re: QANTAS Catalina on the way

Having read of the three flying status Catalinas that will be in Australia once the Qantas aircraft arrives, just how many are there in Australia - including exhibits and where are they? I'll update the revised Darwin's Air War before it goes to the printer in the very near future. With thanks in ad...

Andy,

How much was Nev Parnell's book? I saw it in Darwin and was very impressed at the amount of new information and images he's included.

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Hi all, I'm now reading the book Tally Ho by Bob Foster with Norman Franks. It covers Bob's pre-war and wartime service with 54 (RAF) Squadron among others during the Battle of Britain and then to Australia and Darwin where 54 Sqn took on the Zekes of Ku 202 and Bettys of 753rd Ku with the RAAF's 45...

Re: 50cal Barrel Picket Fence

Hi Longrass, I've covered most of the airfields, camps, aircraft crash sites and military sites in the NT and mapped out most of these and have never seen any fence made of .50" barrels - seems a tragic waste of good barrels, if not the steel needed after the war if it's true, but I'd suggest someon...

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

I'm two thirds the way through Jiro Horikoshi's Eagles of Mitsubishi The Story of the Zero Fighter . Orbis. 1981. I would not ordinarily consider any book on the design and production of an aircraft as anything other than a reference work, however this one is a great read, made all the more interest...
