Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Just finished "The Diamond Dakota Mystery" about the Dutch DC3 shot down north of Broome by Zeros on the way back to Timor, after giving Broome its devastating raid. Crash landing at Carnot bay, half way up the Cape Levesque Peninsula, crew and refugees suffered great privations and death for some, ...

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Just re-read "Nanette" by Edwards Park. A classic tale of a P39 pilot, his aerolplane, and his New Guinea adventures and the air battles for Port Moresby. Not a lot out there covering that specific period. His expanded version is "Angels Twenty" Top reads!!!

Re: Need Plane Serial Number On P-400

Gordy. Top pic of Swamp Rat and the P39 escorts... some long barrel jobs there. Was Park in the picture I wonder?. His books are not specific on dates so what he flew when and where is fascinating but a mystery serial # / aircraft wise. His log books may tell the story. Or 41st records might have so...

Re: Need Plane Serial Number On P-400

Hi Gordy thanks for all that..is that Edwards Park 0-792205 in the shot with #74.? In the PW data base there are details about him and some pictures, the color one being a bit of the Phillips painting...as per my pencil sketch.. which has #74 with the long 20mm barrel in the nose.. my assumption, P4...

Re: Need Plane Serial Number On P-400

Gordy, hi. I would love to know the serial # of the P400 flown by Edwards Park who wrote about flying it in the early Pt. Moresby days of WW2 The tail No was 74, and the book is called "Nanette" .. his name for the aircraft.. and one of the best reads about those torrid times... and his love of flyi...

Re: Recover them Yes or No

Just one example of the tragedy of NOT recovering wrecks. In the early 70s I was able to land at Gasmata, New Britain and have a look at the unique Japanese WW2 aircraft there. 1. Val dive bomber, in diving pose, blown up on its nose with the tail hook pointing skywards. Very complete, later recover...

Re: Pilot found hanging in tree on the Kokoda track PNG

Yes, we can all be sceptical. Look at the picture and make up your own mind. In certain environments fabrics, bones and other things last longer than as usually accepted. I dont claim... nor does the originator that there is a "body" there, that would have disintergrated, but there will be bones, te...

Re: Pilot found hanging in tree on the Kokoda track PNG

A good picture on the 'Age' newspaper site. Very spooky. Dont think there has been anyone bailing out into the rainforest up that way since the War.At the cold high altitudes, some materials wouldnt rot away like down on the tropic coast. A most fascinating and remarkable find. Lets hope some detail...
