Re: Contemporary maps of Solomon airifelds

Try the Lands Department, Honiara SI. In 71 we flew aerial mapping imagery around Honiara at various scales, when the old fields were more visible than they are now. It was all B&W stuff, but the prints and negs might still remain on file, in storage, archived ?? Also covered San Cristobal Is, Tulag...

Re: Images from Iwo Jima

Thanks for that site address. What a fabulous set of images. I gave my top vote to the dark beach scene of Marines unloading supplies by photographer P Queenan. That is an award winning shot. But what an awful and unhappy slice of terrain, gained at a terrible price. From the aviators perspective th...

Re: P-38 casualty ? other losses ?

The remains of the DH -84 were re-discovered by Steve Fowler of Cairns after 3 attempts, 25? 35 ? yrs ago. Terrible country; ver...

Re: Claim HMAS Sydney wreck found

There is now a large format hardcover book ( AU$60) produced by David Mearns, who led the Sydney search, and also recently found the Centaur Hospital ship, torpedoed off Brisbane. (Another book to come??) The HMAS Sydney book contains many fascinating historical and recent pictures, and those show th...

Re: QANTAS Catalina on the way

Better have the nav and headings right !... or smack into an island, as some did. A dangerous enough game just d...

Can Lt Col Guivarra, who donated this artifact to ? , confirm its stated provenance...and who collected it and when.? Having visited the Yamamoto wreck site and seen the severely crushed and burned front 2/3rds of the aircraft.. it would have taken a major dig / disturbance of the wreckage to find t...

Re: under the ice

If you are refering to the Greenland group...it was 6 ? X P38s and 2 X B17s that forced landed there. Finally located by ice penetrating radar, a steam gizmo 'the gopher' was deigned and built to melt a shaft down... some 270 ft !. Then a cavity was steamed out before dismantling the aircraft. There...
