Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Hi All..Once again Doc Bogo is correct regarding the Ishiki Brigade's historic past (I.E. the "Marco Polo Bridge Incident". I believe that the battalion was also involved in the infamous "Rape of Nanking" but I may be mistaken. At any rate, I am in possession of a shin-gunto(?) that is, a noncom's s...

Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Right you are, there, Doc. I was being kind. I'm wondering if the producers at HBO really talked to vets who were there or actually did the research that's available in order to portray the real event. As I mentioned before though, it all goes to continuity, etc. and keeping with 'historical fiction...

Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Hello everyone, It's been awhile since I've been to this site and I apologize for being so tardy. I am mightily pleased that some searches have come to fruition via some info that I may have passed along. I have been anticipating the HBO series "The Pacific" and have enjoyed watching it for the firs...

Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Hello John, Welcome to the Pacific Wrecks forums. I almost despaired of hearing from anyone who may have been familiar with Creswell's battalion. There's a person whom you may want to contact in regard to learning more about your great-uncle. His name is Bill Bartsch an...

Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Hi, I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this post. You can do no better than to be in contact with Peter Flahavin regarding the Guadalcanal campaign. There is a gentleman, however, who is researching a book about the Tenaru River fight. He is Bill Bartsch and I'm sorry to say that I've ...

Re: USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA
Eric, Many thanks for the updated information. Life, as we know it, has taken me down several different paths lately but hopefully I will be able to devote some time to my quest soon. Again, thank you for thinking of me while in Maryland at the archives. Best regards, Joe

Re: Recover them Yes or No --NO!
Again, I have to agree with the foregoing post. Given the thousands of tons of war materiel lost, shot down, sunk, broken, sabotaged, burned, abandoned, left to rot, and otherwise orphaned, I've got to say, "Where do you start?End?Begin?Stop?" What criteria is used as to what would constitute a "wor...
I'm not out to "beat" anyone to it, it's just I've gotten to like making Google Earth tours, and on this one, I'll be using some tricks like using photos from the website, basic HTML stuff, and advanced views, etc. It'll be slicker than snot when I'm finished. I should have it done ...

Eric, Thanks (in advance) for checking on the internet research. Just in case you do get there, I am interested primarily in LTCOL Creswell's battalion, especially unit after action reports as I am trying to put together a timeline of my father's experiences on the 'Canal. (He was XO of B-1-1) In re...

Thank you for that info. I tried a year or two ago to contact the USMC historical command but found that they were in the middle of moving from the Washington Navy Yard to Quantico. I Hope that they've made that move by now. Is it possible to do research online? It's all but impossible for me to und...

USMC on Guadalcanal/USS SOUTH DAKOTA BB-57
jose50 here again. It seems that I post a reply to my own posts at the rate of about three per year. I notice, however, that this topic receives more attention than any other in this forum. I must infer, therefore, that there are folks out there who are interested in this particular topic, i.e 1st M...

Brigadier- I would think that the use of DNA testing could narrow down whether or not any particular set of remains belong to any specific ethnic group. Personally, I think that if exhumed remains could be identified in this fashion then they should be returned to their country of origin. For the re...
