Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?
Right now, I am working through a collection of short stories covering WW2, called 100 Best True Stories of World War Two. It covers the entire war, including the Eastern Front, and has one piece on the Russo-Finnish Winter War of 1939-1940. The stories are either personal accounts or news stories f...

Re: Salvage Wellington Bomber
Hi, a freind of mine is looking at the feasability of salvaging a Wellington bomber from 109 meters of water. Could anyone provide links to resources which may help in planning the logistics and technical requirements of an operation like this. Thanks Simon Here is a link to a website giving some i...

Re: C-87 41-24027
Greetings Tony, I suspect that the correct date is 2 August 1943, since the C-87 was the cargo version of the B-24 bomber, and I do not believe that any were converted prior to the end of 1942. You might want to check on a history of the B-24 and see when the conversions started. Also, I just notice...

Re: P-40 at Noro, Solomon Islands
Thanks for the information, gentlemen. If the one aircraft is in the water short of the runway, divers might know about it, if not, I will have a couple of divers along just for things like that. The expedition is beginning to shape up, and it looks like I will have a museum sponsor in the near futu...

Re: P-40 at Noro, Solomon Islands
Assuming that I make it out there, and right now it looks like I will, I am likely to be getting fuel at Noro. I will check on this one, and try for pictures and a serial number.

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?
Presently, I am going through The Japanese Navy at the End of WW2, and also Morison's Breaking the Bismarcks Barrier, since I am planning an expedition to the New Georgia group in the Central Solomons to locate the wrecks of several ships, to include the USS Grampus, a submarine that vanished in the...

Re: Veterans of Peleliu, especially of C/1/1, First Mardiv
I am not sure if you have seen the book, Marine at War, by Russell Davis. Mr. Davis served on Peleliu with the 1st Marines, and wrote a very vivid account of the fighting on the island. I would have to check my copy as to which unit he served with precisely, and then post it here as well.

Re: PT 300
Sorry for the additional post, but there does not appear to be a way of editing a previous post that I could locate quickly. Given that the stern sank immediately, that would not have burned, but as the boat was made of two layers of half-inch mahogany marine plywood, with a waterproof canvas layer ...

Re: PT 300
I found the following information on the loss of PT-300 on the Hyperwar website, At Close Quarters, PT Boats in the US Navy. On December 18 three planes came over. Only one went into a suicide dive. Lt. Comdr. Almer P. Colvin, commander of Squadron 16, gave PT 300 a last-second swing to the right. T...

Re: Japanese wrecks lying in Hansa Bay PNG
You might want to check the following website for any information it might have. It is a listing of Japanese Warship and Merchant Ship losses during the war. It is in chronological order, and gives the approximate latitude and longitude of each loss. You will need to get the latitude and longitude o...

The book you would need for Japanese merchant ship losses is a US government publication, Japanese Naval and Merchant Ship Losses, available online at the following website. http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/Japan/IJN/JANAC-Losses/JANAC-Losses-4.html The charts give the approximate latitude and longit...

Re: IJN ship attaked-ID?
S. E. Morison, in his book, Breaking the Bismarcks Barrier, on page 56, gives a complete list of all Japanese combat and merchant ships involved in the Battle of the Bismarcks Sea in March of 1943. In addition, in the Handbook of Japanese Military Forces, September of 1944, see the Hyperwar website ...

Re: Wrecks in the South China Sea?
Hi all Please tell me how can I collect all wreck data from 1700s to the end of WW2 in the South China Sea. Thanks! That is an ambitious project, and one that will take a lot of time. For WW2, I would recommend the book, Warship Losses of the Second World War by David Brown, and then cross referenc...
