Also....Be careful. The ship in Leyte Gulf on October 24 was CVL-23. There was a later Princeton called CV-37.

Re: tacloban,leyte

Thank-you date may have been 24 Oct 44 I have original citation will double check That could narrow the search dramatically. USS Princeton was sunk off Leyte on the 24th. I know that she had fighters airborne, but they had a crew of one. It is possible that she had bombers returning from strikes or...

Re: tacloban,leyte

Ok...I've whittled it down a bit....Wasp, Hornet, Hancock, Cowpens and Monterey were in John McCain’s Task Force 38.1 which was sent to Ulithi on the 22nd, so those are unlikely. CVs: Intrepid(VA-75) Essex Lexington Franklin Enterprise CVLs: Independence Cabot Princeton Langley San Jacinto Belleau W...

Re: tacloban,leyte

There were about 30 carriers involved in Leyte at that time. Did your Dad say why the plane landed at Tacloban? Based on the date of the 22nd, my guess would be that it was probably forced down by mechanical problems. A crew of two indicates that it was probably either an SBD Dauntless or an SB2C He...

Re: What Pacific based book are you reading at the moment?

Re-reading War Plan Orange: The US Strategy to Defeat Japan, 1897-1945 by Edward S. Miller. Since I am rereading, I won't say there are any eye-openers, but it does challenge some of what I believed to be true about WWII. Specifically, there was an ongoing disagreement between the Navy and the Army ...

Re: New Forum Policy - New Members Must Post Welcome Message

Tom, Welcome to the forum! I don't mean to be argumentative, but my understanding is that the TBF made its first operational ground-based flight during the battle of Midway, a month after Coral Sea. Carrier based operations for the Avenger were later, still. In fact, the Avenger was so new that it o...

Re: P-40E Identification

Hello, Rosie. First thing to look at when differentiating the "E" model from others is the number of guns in the wings. "D"s and earlier had only 4 guns in the wings. "E"s had 6. After that, it gets more difficult. Wiki actually has a pretty good overview. Look about 2/3 down the page. http://en.wik...
