Adding to this during this time period production models of B-26 and B-26A's were in Australia about this time, these models had a bad reputation and was nicknamed "Widowmakers" and "Flying Coffins as so many crashed, it wasn't till the C models came out that they became more stable and developed th...

Sounds like this pilot was flying a Martin B-26 Marauder as the two civilians worked for the Martian aircraft company. As most know the B-26 had many problems and from the sounds of it they were doing test flights before the crash.
