Located in the southeast corner of North Island off the Coronado peninsula in San Diego, bordering San Diego Bay.
North Island was an uninhabited sand flat. During 1912, the US Army Signal Corps established the Signal Corps Aviation School at this location, the first school to provide flight training for military pilots. During 1917, US Congress appropriated the land and two airfields on the island: Naval Air Station San Diego (North Island) and Rockwell Field.
During 1935, moved to March Field, and all of North Island was turned over to the US Navy, but took three years to before all Army operations and personnel departed.
