Location Johnston Airfield is located on Johnston Island in Johnston Atoll. Construction During 1936, the U.S. Navy (USN) began construction of Johnston Airfield plus a seaplane base and refueling facilities. Wartime History During the middle of December 1941, Johnston based two plane detachments from U.S. Navy (USN) Patrol Wing 1 (PatWing 1) and Patrol Wing 2 (PatWing 2). During the Pacific War used as part of the aircraft ferry route from Hawaii to the South Pacific including regular flight operated by Naval Air Transport Service (NATS).
