PBY Catalina piloted by Lt. William S. Sampson landing at Lunga Point Airfield on Guadalcanal
Five days after the USMC landing on the island, a PBY Catalina piloted by Lt. William S. Sampson, USN personal aide to Admiral John McCain. Simpson had been instructed to land offshore, but feigned an engine failure as an excuse to put down on the field. This was the first American aircraft to land at the captured airfield. Soon afterwards, renamed "Henderson Field".
