Built by US Navy SeaBees, as an extension of U.S. Naval Station Tutuila and the Samoa Defense Group Area to protect Upolu and Savai'i. Completed during July 1942
the main runway was 4,000' x 200' and later extended to 6,000' x 350' during March 1943 with taxiways, support buildings and two hangers.
