Ki-43-I Oscar from the 78th Sentai or 1st Sentai parked in ravetment at Vunakanau Airfield near Rabaul
Richard Dunn adds: "78th Sentai aircraft status 27 October 1943 was 12 Type 3 ftrs and 6 Type 1 fighters operational. These would presumably have been the aircraft at Wewak. The ones at Rabaul would be under going repair or training. I can't pontificate on this particular aircraft, but in October 1943 the 78th did have Type 1's on strength"
Osamu Tagaya adds: "Despite similarity to 78th FR tail stripes, the plane is most probably an example of a 1st Sentai machine. For a long time, there have been reports and drawings of 1st Sentai Oscars with horizontal stripe on the fin instead of the well-known "rudder in solid chutai color" during the unit's tour in the Southeastern Area, but this is the first direct photo evidence I have seen of this."
