Aerial view of Torokina AIrfield on the western coast of Bougainville
"The runways of Torokina Airfield stretch along the shore of Bougainville. The southern Pacific island was wrested from the Japanese and converted into a military base by US construction forces. Bougainville was one of the nine Pacific Islands which the US Navy recommended that the US retain as bases. The recommendation was made to the Naval Affairs Committees of the two houses of Congress on September 5, 1945. This picture is serviced for use at your discretion when congrssional discussion of bases is held."
