Aircraft History
Built by Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC). Constructor Number 608. Delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as CA-8 Wirraway serial number A20-406. On October 29, 1941 assigned to 1 Air Depot (1 AD). On November 14, 1941 assigned to No. 5 Service Flying Training School (5 SFTS) at Uranquinty Airfield.

Wartime History
On December 10, 1941 took off on a training flight piloted by LAC D. Spowart landing at Uranquinty Airfield flipped on back through excessive use of brakes. Damaged were the fin, rudder, canopy, port wing tip, engine and airscrew. Afterwards, repaired.

On July 31, 1942 piloted by LAC N Sullivan, while performing aerobatics, the engine seized, and landed wheels up at Yarracundry Relief Landing Ground and was repaired afterwards.

On September 15, 1942 forced landed wheels up prior to landing at Uranquinty Airfield. Crew, F/O L K Harris and WAG Sgt I D Rendell were uninjured and the Wirraway was repaired afterwards.

Next on November 2, 1942 over shoot landing causing damage to mainplane when aircraft ground looped. P/O I T Wickens and P/O C Jones uninjured.

Afterwards, on November 12, 1942 returned to CAC then transfered to Australian National Airways (ANA) then returned to 1 AD. On February 15, 1943 assigned to RAAF Armaments School.

Mission History
On March 17, 1943 force landed into Lake Corangamite settling into six inches of water 400 yards from shore near Colac in Victoria. Officially stricken on May 11, 1943.

Wreckage
Rediscovered in 2005 when the aircraft was was exposed by receding water levels in Lake Corangamite and reported by Parks Victoria officers to Heritage Victoria. The site appears intact and remains mostly submerged.
