On February 28, 1943 pilot TBF-1 Avenger 06109 on a mission against southern Bougainville and went Missing In Action (MIA). Berry was captured by the Japanese and became a Prisoner Of War (POW) and was executed on March 4, 1944–March 5, 1944 during the Talili Bay Massacre / Tunnel Hill Massacre / Tunnel Hill Incident.
