Douglas TBD Devastator
Technical Information
Background
Delivered to the US Navy in 1937, the Devastator was
the most advanced torpedo bomber in the world when it was built, but by the start
of the Pacific War, was obsolete compaired to the Japanese B5N Kate and
A6M2 Zeros. During the Battle of Midway, 35 TBD-1 Devastators sent to attack the Japanese fleet and were all shot down without inflicting any damage. Afterwards, all Devastators were withdrawn from front-line
service and replaced by the TBF Avenger.
