Aircraft History Built by Short in Rochester, Kent United Kingdom. Delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) as S.23 Sunderland Mark V serial number VB880. Postwar On September 6, 1953 sent to Fiji at the cost of 61,500 pounds. Test flown at Lauthala Bay on 14 September 1953 by Wing Commander B. LePine. Coded KN-D, XX-B, XX-K, K with radio call sign ZK-ZGK. On March 6, 1959 assigned to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) to 5 Squadron with tail code KN-D. Took part in a fly past to mark opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge on May 30, 1959. Served with 5 Squadron until April 11, 1959. Sinking History On November 4, 1959, badly damaged when it accidentally impacted rocks in Whanga Lagoon off the Chatham Islands. This Sunderland sank in shallow water. Later, dragged ashore and stripped of usable parts and written off on December 9, 1959. This was the first RNZAF Mark V Sunderland to be written off due to damage.
