Aircraft History
Built by Supermarine and assigned to the Royal Navy (RN) Fleet Air Arm (FAA) as Seafire PR228. Assigned to Royal Navy Air Station Bankstown.

Mission History
On August 8, 1945 took off from Laverton Field on a flight bound for Bankstown Airfield after conducting drop tank trials. This Seafire crashed near the town of Barnawartha in northern Victoria.

The body of F/Lt Shaffer was recovered by members of No 11 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) and buried at the Benalla War Cemetery at plot C, row B, grave 5.
