|Pilot 2nd Lt Miles B. McDougal, Jr., O-766586 (MIA / KIA) ME
MIA September 6, 1944
Built by Republic. Delivered to the U. S. Army. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South-West Pacific and reassembled.
Assigned to the 5th Air Force, 348th Fighter Group, 340th Fighter Squadron. No known nickname or nose art.
Took off from Noemfoor Island on a bombing mission over Kahoe on Halmahera. Shot down by anti-aircraft fire during the bomb run and crashed.
Post war, this crash site was visited by an Australian War Graves Unit an the pilot's remains were recovered and buried in a grave at Morotai.
Daniel Leahy adds:
"According to my research and that of Ted Darcy, the pilot is still listed as missing."
McDougal was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized on the tablets of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.
