2nd Lt. Robert E. Thorpe with P-47D Thunderbolt Nose Number 30 parked at Gusap Airfield
On May 27, 1944 ditched P-47D Thunderbolt 42-22661 off Kairiru Island, swam ashore and was captured and executed by the Japanese on May 31, 1944. He remains listed as Missing In Action (MIA).
