Pilot 2nd Lt. Cyrus J. Lynd, O-727494 (KIA, BR) NV Crashed March 1, 1943 MACR none Wartime History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40E Warhawk serial number unknown. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 8th Fighter Squadron (8th FS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On March 1, 1943 took off from 3-Mile Drome near Port Moresby and crashed on the Kokoda Trail (exact location unknown). Recovery of Remains After the crash, his remains were recovered. Postwar, his remains were transported to Hawaii for permanent burial. Memorial Lynd was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He is buried at Honolulu Memorial Cemetery (Punchbowl) at plot E, grave 786.
