Pilot 2nd Lt Bernard A. Makowski (survived) Chicago, IL Crashed November 21, 1942 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Curtiss in Buffalo, New York. Constructors Number 627. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-40E Warhawk serial number 41-5607. Assigned to "Project X". Disassembled then loaded aboard USS Hammondsport and shipped to Australia arriving February 26, 1942 and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force, 49th Fighter Group (49th FG), 8th Fighter Squadron (8th FS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost engine serial number 40-396. Mission History On November 21, 1942 took off from 3 Mile Drome (Kila) near Port Moresby piloted by 2nd Lt Bernard A. Makowski on a mission. While attempting to land at Kokoda Airfield, crash landed and slid into trees 200 yards from the runway. Pilot Makowski was unhurt in the crash and returned to duty afterwards.
