Lt. Richard E. Smith with P-38F "The Japanese Sandman"
The left side of the nose has squadron number 26. The nickname "The Japanese Sandman" has not yet been painted. Below the cockpit is a scoreboard with "Lt R. E. Smith" and two Japanese rising sun flags indicating his aerial victory claims on January 6, 1943 and March 3, 1943. Therefore, this photo was taken sometime between March 3, 1943 and April 12, 1943 when he made his thirds aerial victory claim.
