Pilot 2nd Lt. George W. Snell, O-749093 (MIA / KIA) CO MIA January 17, 1944 at 2:00pm MACR 1776 Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 2296. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as P-38J-10-LO Lightning 42-67785. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific (SOPAC) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force (13th AF), 18th Fighter Group (18th FG), 44th Fighter Squadron (44th FS) "Vampire Squadron". No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On January 17, 1944 took off from Stirling Airfield piloted by 2nd Lt. George W. Snell on a mission to escort bombers over Rabaul. Last seen at 2:00pm over the southwest coast of New Ireland. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA). Also lost were P-38J pilot Munson (MIA), P-38J 42-67179 (MIA), P-38J 42-67611 (MIA), P-38H 42-66680 (MIA), P-38H 42-66897 (rescued), P-38J 42-67171 (MIA). Memorials Snell was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart, posthumously. He is memorialized at Honolulu Cemetery (Punchbowl) at the courts of the missing on court 7.
