Pilot ? Crashed February 1944 MACR none Aircraft History Built by Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (LAC) in Burbank. Constructors Number 222-7935. Purchased at a cost of $98,441.00 using funds F-1, Army Air Force Order Number ac-21217. On April 16, 1943 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as a P-38G-10-LO Lightning serial number 42-13501. On April 21, 1943 flown to McClellan Airfield to the Sacramento Air Depot (SAD). On May 24, 1943 flown to Fort Mason Airfield. On May 25, 1943 assigned to "Obey" Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific (SoPAC) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 13th Air Force, 347th Fighter Group, 12th Fighter Squadron. Nicknamed "Jini". Squadron number 163. Mission History The date of the crash, squadron and pilot are not yet confirmed. Likely during February 1944 took off Fighter 2 (Kukum) on Guadalcanal on a mission and crashed. Officially, this P-38 was condemned February 7, 1944 as AFMSC / CON SAL ACCNCR. Wreckage This P-38 crashed into the jungle in the Cape Esperance area of Guadalcanal. During 2014, this crash site was visited and photographed. One of the photographs taken shows serial number "42-13501" on the wreckage, possibly indicating it is this aircraft or a part from this aircraft. Parts of this aircraft were salvaged by Kurt Markwarth and Anders Markwarth and are stored at the Markwarth Collection (Solomon Islands War Museum). Salvaged material including the three propeller blades, fuselage skin yellow stenciled "42-13501". During the middle of July 2017, wreckage from this P-38 was placed into a shipping container and exported to Australia.
