75th Joint Assault
|Pilot Captain Otis Perkins, O-374949 (MIA / KIA) Lawrence, KS
Crashed April 29, 1945
On Okinawa, Otis flew unarmed Piper Cubs as a "bird-dog" spotting enemy troop concentrations for U. S. Army artillery. He also volunteered for missions over enemy territory, dropping leaflets assuring the Okinawan populace that it was safe to surrender to American troops. U.S. pilots refused to wear parachutes flying missions over Okinawa, as it was Japanese practice to behead captured pilots.
