Aircraft History
Built by Polikarpov. Assigned to the VSS (Soviet Air Force) and painted in dark green color with Red Army star. Served in the Russian Far East or Mongolia.

Wartime History
Captured by the Japanese in Manchuria, possibly during the Battle of Khalkhin Gol / Nomonhan Incident. Possibly, after force landing on June 24, 1939 and Captured intact by the Japanese.

Wreckage
Repaired and transported to Japan for study. In Japan, appeared in natural aluminium or light gray finish with a Hinomaru applied. Note, unclear if this was a single I-16 repaired, or one of two captured.
