Aircraft History
Built by Grumman as Model G-50 in Bethpage, New York. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F6F-5 Hellcat bureau number 58043.

Wartime History
Assigned to USS Sangamon CVE-26 to Fighter Squadron 37 (VF-37). No known nickname or nose art.

Mission History
On September 16, 1944 took off from USS Sangamon (CVE-26) piloted by Ensign Jesse E. McNinch on a strike against airfields on Halamahera. While strafing near Galela (Galeia), this Hellcat hit into trees and crashed. When this aircraft failed to return it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

Memorials
McNinch was officially declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. McNinch is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. McNinch also has a memorial marker at Elmwood Memorial Gardens in Columbia, SC.
