USMC MAW-2 MAG-12 VMF-216 Former Assignments MAG-11 VMF-214 "Black Sheep" |
Aircraft History Built by Vought. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-1A Corsair bureau number 17735. Fuselage code 735 (last three digits of the bureau number). Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific (SOPAC) and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) to Marine Air Group 11 (MAG-11), Marine Fighting Squadron 214 "Black Sheep" VMF-214. No known nickname or nose art. During 1943, Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was photographed seated on the tail stabalizer of this Corsair with the stenciled bureau number "17735" and "F4U-1" visible behind him. The famous photograph of Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington wearing flight gear with a U.S. star behind him is likely the left fuselage star of this Corsair. In February 1944, assigned to Marine Fighting Squadron 216 (VMF-216) and operated from Piva South Airfield (Piva Yoke) on western Bougainville and flew several combat missions during the squadron's second tour of duty. Robert Marshall adds: "[This Corsair] was assigned to VMF-216 in Feb. '44. It shows up in photos at Piva in '44 and appears a couple of times in -216's flight logs. Strangely, the history card doesn't show it assigned to any VMF- squadrons." Ultimate fate unknown, likely written off and scrapped.
