On July 30, 1943 took off on an escort mission for nine B-24's, with an escort of 16 P-38's and sixteen P-40 Kittyhawks from Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) 16 Squadron and 40+ US Navy F4U' Corsairs on a mission to bomb Kahilli Airfield on southern Bougainville but found the target area covered in clouds. Instead, the formation attacked Ballale Airfield.

Meanwhile, A6M Zeros took off from Ballale Airfield climbed above and released two phosphorus bombs in an attempt to break up the Allied formation. Over the target, anti-aircraft fire was severe, but the bombers dropped 22 tons of bombs. Zeros attacked when the formation left the target area. The RNZAF made no claims and had two planes slightly damaged.

When this aircraft failed to return, Nichols was officially declared Missing In Action (MIA).

Nichols was declared dead the day of the mission. He is memorialized on the tablet of the missing at Manila American Cemetery.
