Aircraft History
Built by Mitsubishi. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type Zero Observation Seaplane / F1M2 Pete manufacture number unknown (four digits). Painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaced.

Wartime History

Assigned to the 958 Kokutai. No known tail number or markings. During 1943–1944 this Pete operated from Kairiru Seaplane Base on Kairiru Island and flew patrols and protected convoys arriving or departing from the Wewak area and patrolling as far north as the Admiralty Islands. During 1943 or early 1944 this Pete was abandoned on the shore and was likely stripped for parts by the Japanese during the war.

Wreckage
This Pete remains in situ near St. John's Mission on Kairiru Island. By the early 1970s, the aluminum skin was removed leaving only the fuselage frame and fuel tanks. The main float and wing floats are nearby detached from the fuselage.
