Aircraft History
Built by Mitsubishi. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type Zero Observation Seaplane / F1M2 Pete manufacture number unknown (four digits). Painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaced.

Wartime History

Assigned to the 958 Kokutai. No known tail number or markings. During 1943–1944 this Pete operated from Kairiru Seaplane Base on Kairiru Island and flew patrols and protected convoys arriving or departing from the Wewak area and patrolling as far north as the Admiralty Islands. During 1943 or early 1944 this Pete was sunk at its mooring, crash landed or shot down into the Kairiru Strait.

Wreckage
This Pete remains in situ upside down on a sandy bottom at a depth of 90' in Kairiru Strait. There are strong currents at this location and sea life including small fish and soft coral covers the wreckage.
