Pilot F/Lt Arnold Alfred Lange, 17413 Ditched September 5, 1946 at 5:08pm Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Constructors Number 33464. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-47B-35-DK Skytrain serial number 44-77132. Ferried via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia as part of defense aid. Wartime History During June 1945, delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as C-47B Dakota serial number A65-115. Assigned to No. 35 Squadron. Call Sign VH-RGC. Later, assigned to No. 36 Squadron. Mission History On September 5, 1946 took off piloted by F/Lt Arnold A. Lange. At 5:08pm, this aircraft ditched with starboard engine on fire 500 yards off Mendil Beach near Darwin. The pilot and three of the four passengers on board were injured but all were rescued. Wreckage During October 2006 the aircraft was discovered by dive operator Shaun Uden. The wreck is reportedly "virtually intact, lying on the bottom of the sea, just off East Point".
