Pilot Sgt Granton Thomas Harrison, 407578 RAAF (survived) Crash Landed January 12, 1942 Aircraft History Built by Brewster as model 339E. Constructors Number 218. Delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) as Buffalo Mark I serial number W8202. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Singapore. A series of three LIFE photographs shows the aircraft inside the shipping crate, a crane lifting and reassembled in a hanger with the fuselage mounted onto the wings. On August 26, 1941 it assigned to Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No. 453 Squadron and retained the British serial number with code TD-G. Nicknamed "Shirley" named after the wife of Sgt Griffith. On August 27, 1941 took off piloted by F/O Frederick Leigh Bowes and force landed wheels up at Sembawang Airfield on Singapore Island. Mission History On January 12, 1942 took off piloted by Sgt Granton T. Harrison (pilot assigned to No. 21 Squadron) on a search mission. During the flight, this Buffalo collided with Buffalo AN171 while carrying out a weaving maneuver Damaged, this aircraft crash landed at Mersing on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Pilot Harrison survived unhurt and was able to walk away.
