Wartime History Assigned to the 20th Air Force (20th AF), 29th Bombardment Group (29th BG), 6th Bombardment Squadron (6th BS). No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On May 5, 1945 took off from North Field (Andersen AFB) on Guam pilot 1st Lt Ralph B. Miller on a bombing mission against Tachiarai Airfield on Kyushu Island in Japan. Eyewitnesses reported hat the aircraft crashed at 36° 46' N and 132° 15'E. Eight parachutes were seen to open, but the identity of who bailed out could not be determined. When this plane failed to return the entire crew was listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Corliss landed safely but was immediately captured by the Japanese and became a Prisoner Of War (POW). On June 20, 1945 he was "shot while attempting escape", possibly a euphemism for executed. His body was never located and remains listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Recovery of Remains Postwar, the remains of Bassett were recovered and transported to the United States for burial. Memorials The entire crew were declared dead the day of the mission. The entire crew (with the exception of Bassett) are memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing. Miller and Finkelstein and Corliss on court 7. Corliss was officially declared dead on June 20, 1945. He earned the Air Medal, Purple Heart, posthumously. Corliss also has a memorial marker at Forest Glade Cemetery in Somersworth, NH. Miller earned Finkelstein earned the Air Medal, Purple Heart, posthumously.
