Enlargement of crew of B-17E "Frank Buck" 41-2659 on the beach at Hood Point watching a outrigger canoe
Wartime caption: "BOMBER SALVAGED IN NEW GUINEA - NEW GUINEA, Beneath the giant wing of their B-17, the crew of a flying fortress which was forced down on a beach after a raid on Rabaul considers plans to salvage the bomber, as natives stand in a canoe that brought matting for the portable runway that made it possible for the plane to take off on the soft sand. The plane was salvaged, saving the Army approximately a half-million dollars. Latest reports from the New Guinea front indicate that MacArthur's men have taken Gona and Buna. #1A PASSED BY CENSOR CREDIT LINE (ACME) 12/17/42 (RK)"
