Wartime caption: "BOMBER SALVAGED IN NEW GUINEA - NEW GUINEA, Beneath the giant wing of their B-17, the crew of a flying fortress which was forced down on a beach after a raid on Rabaul considers plans to salvage the bomber, as natives stand in a canoe that brought matting for the portable runway that made it possible for the plane to take off on the soft sand. The plane was salvaged, saving the Army approximately a half-million dollars.
