AWM Caption: "NEW GUINEA. DESPITE BOTH ELEVATORS BEING BADLY DAMAGED BY ACK ACK FIRE AND SHRAPNEL HAVING TORN THE TYRES OF BOTH LANDING WHEELS TO THE CANVAS, A FLYING FORTRESS WAS FLOWN 400 MILES TO ITS BASE IN NEW GUINEA, AND LANDED SAFELY. THE PILOT WAS 1ST LIEUT. JAMES C. DIOFFENDERFER [sic Diffenderfer] OF LOGAN, VIRGINIA. THE FORTRESS WAS DAMAGED IN ATTACKING A CONVOY. THIS PICTURE SHOWS THE TORN TYRES."
