|
Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi completed on January 14, 1942. At the factory painted overall gray with black engine cowl. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Carrier Fighter / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number 3537. Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Kōkūtai (Air Group). No known tail code or markings. Mission History During 1942, this Zero crashed near Boera to the west of Port Moresby. Likely, the pilot died in the crash. This Zero crashs sometime prior to July 11, 1942. Wreckage On July 11, 1942 the wreckage of this Zero was surveyed by Allied intelligence and assessed as crash site "AD 10". Postwar, the crash site of this Zero was known to local villagers, but scrapped. Justin Taylan searched this area in 2006: "Locals knew of an aircraft crash in this area, but reported it was removed or scrapped, or this could be P-400 Airacobra AP378 in this same area. Villagers remember the site of the crash, but time did not allow for a survey of that location for any remaining evidence."
