  A6M Zero
IJN
? Kokutai

Aircraft History
Built by Mitsubishi or Nakajima. Unclear if this aircraft is an A6M2 Model 21 or A6M3 Model 22 with short barrel 20mm cannons in the wings. Painted overall dark green.

Wartime History
This Zero ditched off Ablingi, roughly 20 miles west of Gasmata.

Wreckage
The wreckage of this Zero is upright atop the coral reef with a rock underneath each wing, allowing a diver to swim underneath the fuselage.

Discovered during the late 1960s or early 1970s by a diver who recovered the gun site to Australia. During 1978, Rod Pearce salvaged the 20mm cannons from the wreck and was able to clean and restore them so the breech would open using compressed air.
