Mission History
Sunk off the Cape Esperence area off Guadalcanal.  Both crew members drown aboard the sub when it sank.

Salvage
Located off Guadalcanal in an aerial photographs. This disabled sub was salvaged by divers from the USS Ortolan ASR 5 in June 1943 (exact date when raised possibly June 17 or July 17, 1943). Batteries were extracted first by divers then the hull rose to the surface of its own volition. Divers included: J.W. Crawford, Douglas R. Kemp and Lt. F. X. Sommer (M.C.) USNR. Afterwards, the sub was studied by Navy submarine experts. Documents were salvaged from the engine room, and the bodies of the dead crew members were found.

Wreckage
Salvaged sometime in 1944, by American forces, it was placed near the wreck of the Yamazuki Maru. It is unclear if it was salvaged later in the war, or abandoned and scrapped post war.
