Wartime History
This submarine, while returning to Rabaul on January 3, 1944 from a supply run in New Guinea. Reportedly (unconfirmed as sub was sunk soon afterwards)  the sub spotted a downed airman, and rescued him.  The pilot was Gregory Boyington who bailed out of F4U 17915.
