Circumstances
Patroling in central Queensland waters, and had kidnapped a local fisherman for interrogation, but he escaped and swam ashore. P-39 Aircobras from Townsville searched the area for the submarine. Missing and believed sunk in central Queensland waters, possibly near Port Clinton on June 18, 1943.

Wreckage
The wreck is located in about 40 meters water several km off Port Clinton in the vicinity of Entrance Island, Queensland is suspect of being a Japanese I-178 and could have the remains of its 86 crew members aboard. No information about further investigations into this wreck or dives are available.

Discovery "April Fools Joke"
This article was an April Fool's joke in the Morning Bulletin newspaper of Rockhampton, on April 1st 1995 stating that local residents had discovered.
