Ship History
The Matoma was a 500 ton M. V. Burns Philp ship, requistioned by ANGAU. Two of the engineers were Bett Sewell and Roy Evenett. The Skipper was Jack Howard [in April 1942.]
Wartime History
This ship was used along the southern coast of New Guinea, including use on several trips that involved transporting downed American aviators. On April 28, 1942 it trasported A6M2 Zero 1575 pilot Yoshimitsu Maeda who had been taken POW after crashing on Otomata Plantation, and was picked up at Abau.
Siniking HIstory
She later sank without trace in the Gulf of Papua from unknown causes, either rough weather or enemy action.
