This book is a classic novel. Although written with fictional location names, it details the author's experiences on Guadalcanal and the Galloping Horse battle in early January 1943, when the Marines were relieved by the US Army and began to assult the remaining Japanese positions on the island.

This book was adaped into two Hollywood movies: Thin Red Line (1964) and Thin Red Line (1999).
